Which Species Are Found In And Around Syracuse?

Residents of Syracuse, New York may encounter a handful of cockroach species. However, you primarily need to worry about American cockroaches and German cockroaches. They’ll be explored in greater depth below.

German Cockroaches

Syracuse residents are going to encounter German cockroaches. They can grow over half an inch with some reaching 5/8ths of an inch. These roaches are easy to identify because they have racing stripes near the back of their heads. Remember that they’re prolific breeders so the infestation will quickly worsen. They tend to hide under warm appliances, including fridges, ovens, and dishwashers.

American Cockroaches

American cockroaches are one of the largest species in our area. Some members of this species can grow up to two inches in length. They’re reddish-brown and can fly. Suffice to say, their presence is going to concern you greatly. Another issue is their lifespan. These cockroaches can live a long time. You have to take steps to wipe out the infestation quickly. Thankfully, these cockroaches usually do not enter homes. Instead, they try to stay outside near broken sewer pipes and dried plumbing traps.

Below, you’ll learn more about some of the other species found in Syracuse.

Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches

Male and female members of the Pennsylvania Wood species are dramatically different. Females are shorter with shorter wings. As for males, they have full wings and can grow up to an inch in length. They’re native to the Eastern United States and usually do not infest residential dwellings. Even when they enter homes, they usually do not reproduce inside. Problems that lead to Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches include woodpiles on your property and blocked gutters.

Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches

These cockroaches are smaller than most since they only reach a third of an inch. They have dark speckles but they’re light tan. Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches are native to Europe and invaded North America many years ago. Today, they can be found in many states, including Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, and New York. They rarely enter homes.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental cockroaches can grow over an inch, and they’re dark black or brown. Males grow wings that cover most of their bodies, but females never develop wings. These roaches are similar to American cockroaches. The difference is that Oriental roaches are willing to stay outside in cold temperatures.

Smokey Brown Cockroaches

Smokey brown cockroaches grow over an inch in length. They’re shiny and reddish-brown. They tend to stay in the south because they prefer warm temperatures. Still, they may travel north by hiding in shipping boxes. Adults develop full wings so they’re different than Oriental cockroaches.

Surinam Cockroaches

Surinam cockroaches are ¾ of an inch and all-female. There are no male members of the species. Instead, the females carry eggs and give live birth. It is rare to encounter Surinam cockroaches but they can be found in greenhouses. They rarely travel as far north as Syracuse.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

Brown-banded cockroaches are one of the smaller species in our area. They are roughly half an inch in length. In terms of color, they’re light brown or tan. Thanks to their size and appearance, they’re sometimes mistaken for German cockroaches, but there is one difference. German cockroaches have racing stripes on their heads. Brown-banded cockroaches do not. They have a dark brown mark that is solid. Brown-banded cockroaches may infest residential and commercial structures, but they’re rare in our area.
